Sunday Rewound

December 18, 2007

I really should not just talk about Sunday because the whole weekend was amazing. We started on Saturday with our Community Breakfast. This month we focused on our “Serve Project,” which was a toy drive for The Refuge House. This organization is for women and children that are victims of spousal and sexual abuse. We collected three tubs full of toys for them! It will be great to know on Christmas morning, these kids will have something to open. Giving to strangers with no press, publicity, or an expectation of something in return…what a novel idea.

Now on to Sunday…

·        The sanctuary décor is awesome. It is so classy and clean. I have called it “A Pier One Christmas.” It looks great so a big thanks to Brenda and her team for making it happen.

·        There was a great feeling in the air as new people mingled with regulars. Having new people is always a good sign, and having people willing to go out of their way to greet them is a testament to the people of Encounter’s desire to truly love the community.

·        Arron and the Worship Team were on point! I told them it was probably some of their best leading. I have never been led into true worship during a song like, “O Come All Ye Faithful,” but the Spirit of God was especially evident during this song. Just read the lyrics of the song sometime, out of the Christmas context, and you will find a true worship song. We have decided to add it to the songs we do the rest of the year.

·        The Christmas Celebration dinner in the Annex was a display of what happens when a community works together. Mary Ellen , our event coordinator, and her team did a superior job. Plenty of food, great music, and about 50 wonderful people made the night exceptional. The White Elephant gift game was hysterical and full of great comments!

·        The highlight of the game was Ben Oder, an Elder of the church, standing up and taking a Shower Radio from a college student, while at the same time declaring, “I think I want to rock in the shower!” You can’t write stuff that good, it was awesome!

It is a true blessing to be the lead pastor of this church, and I am excited about what God is doing here at Encounter!

Ben – You are such a wonderful speaker and teacher. The spirit of the Lord comes through your words. I need to meet your Elder, Ben Oder. I love people who understand that God wants us to have fun and joy in our lives, and He wants us to share the joy within us.

You’ve done a great job with your website, but I am longing to see your face as I listen to you teach. In your “spare” time, keep working on adding video. This request is selfish on my part, but I also want to send your words and images to friends who need encouragement and Bible-based direction in their lives.

I love you, and am SO very proud of you. Laverne
